Welcome

Home Susan Spears, Oregon Watercolor and Acrylic artist, revels in the chance to paint en plein air, outside in the fresh air.  Recently, she went on assignment to central Oregon painting near Warm Springs, Madras, Redmond, and Bend.  Broken Top Golf Course was kind enough to let us paint on their balcony looking across their small lake to Broken Top Volcano which could be seen through the Ponderosa Pine trees.  A drawing, from that trip, with a view of the Metolius River is waiting to be turned into a painting.

During the winter, Susan teaches a drawing class, Inside Line, where she sends the class an itinerary of places to draw.  On the prescribed date, the class shows up to draw.  Many of these line drawings turn into paintings.

In the summer, many people from the drawing class rejoin the class in April to paint outside every Friday from the middle of April through the end of October from 9am - 3pm.

In the website you can see some line drawings of  Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion that will become paintings.

As you can see from the website, creativity is what it's all about.  You will see a lot of corporate art like the mixed media abstracts that were done for the Trainer's Club in Lake Oswego.  Then there are acrylics done on commission for the Portland City Grill.

In fact many of the paintings were individual or corporate commissions like the 3' x 5' portrait of the owner of a Willamette Valley Winery.  Getting a meeting of the minds between the person who's portrait is being done and the artist is a process accomplished with the use of mockups: small watercolor portrait compositions.  When the subject of the portrait says, "yes, I like that one and think that composition best displays my personality" then we proceed to the composition on canvas.

Plein air watercolors are my specialty.  Only by painting "en plein air" can light and depth be acheived as it is!
